Bagasse containers resist oil and water because of how they are made, not because of what is
added to them. The fibre is pressed at high pressure, and that pressing is what closes the
surface and gives it its grease and water resistance. There is no plastic coating — and no PFAS.
Why pressing matters more than coating
Coated paperboard products get their grease resistance from a barrier layer — traditionally
polyethylene, or in some markets a PFAS treatment. Moulded bagasse takes the other route: the shape and
the surface both come from the mould and the press. That is why the material can handle hot, wet and
oily food while staying a single material, with no plastic layer to separate at disposal.
We run oil and leak-resistance tests on production, so this is a checked property rather than an
assumption.
Where the limits are — told straight
- Very hot liquid held for a long time is the hardest case for any moulded fibre
container, ours included. It is not what the format is designed around. - Deep-fry oil straight out of the fryer is a different job from a curry or a
burger. If that is your programme, test it first. - Cutlery cuts and scrapes the surface. That is true of every fibre product.
This is why we would rather you ordered a sample than took our word for it. Put your own dishes in
it, in your own kitchen, before you commit to a container load.
What to look at when you compare materials
| Property | Moulded bagasse fibre |
|---|---|
| Grease resistance | From high-pressure pressing — no PFAS treatment |
| Plastic layer | None |
| PFAS-free | Yes |
| Tested for leaks | Yes, on production |
These are the properties buyers look for when sourcing leak-proof biodegradable containers
and sustainable packaging for delivery and catering programmes.
Where it matters most in the range
Grease and moisture performance is the deciding factor for
clamshells (burgers, rice meals, combination plates),
bowls (soups and noodles) and
trays (multi-item meals). The same material is used for
plates and
lids and cutlery.
Next step
Tell us what you are serving — especially if it is saucy, greasy or very hot — and we will point you
at the format that suits it, then arrange a sample so you can test it yourself.
Frequently asked questions
Are bagasse containers oil and water resistant?
The fibre is pressed at high pressure, which is what gives the finished surface its oil and water resistance u2014 there is no added plastic coating. We run oil and leak-resistance tests on production.
Do they go soggy with curry or gravy?
The pressed surface resists oil and water without an added coating, so it does not behave like thin paperboard. For heavy sauces, order a sample and test it with your own dishes before committing to a container load.
Do you test for leaks?
Yes u2014 we run oil and leak-resistance tests on production.
Is a PFAS grease barrier used?
No. Our products are PFAS-free.
What is the minimum order?
100 cartons per model.
